Kripalu Style Yoga

One reason Kripalu Yoga has been embraced by so many people is that it is designed to adapt to all body types, ages, fitness levels, and interests.

As with other styles of yoga, students notice the effects of practice from the first time they step onto their mats.

Like most yoga styles and traditions, Kripalu Yoga uses classic asanas (though not a particular set or routine), pranayama (breathwork), development of a quiet mind, and the practice of relaxation. What defines Kripalu Yoga is its emphasis: following the flow of prana (life-force energy), practicing compassionate self-acceptance, developing witness consciousness (observing the activity of the mind without judgment), and taking what is learned “off the mat” and into daily life.

“Kripalu Yoga classes take into account people’s individuality and personal expression,” says Devarshi Steven Hartman, former Director of Kripalu’s Professional Training programs, who found Kripalu Yoga in the early 1980s. “Kripalu Yoga teachers are trained to recognize that we are multidimensional beings, not just physical, and that creativity and spirituality are intricately linked.”

“Kripalu Yoga begins to bear fruit from the very beginning,” says Stephen Cope, Director of the Kripalu Institute for Extraordinary Living and author of The Wisdom of Yoga. “You don’t have to master asanas to feel the peaceful connection to your inner self.”

It is worth remembering that there is only one yoga and can only be one yoga. True, aspirants are of different natures and resort to various doctrines and practices to progress along the path. But one who completes the process of yoga understands its different paths and sees that the systematic practice of various disciplines leads to the same place. In the end, all yogas lead to one great Yoga.—Swami Kripalu (1913–1981)

Trauma Informed Yoga

Trauma informed yoga is for people with a history of trauma, depression or anxiety, who might benefit from a mindful and healing focused approach to yoga.  I use an approach guided by trauma informed yoga and heart centered compassionate Kripalu training which gently releases stress and emotions from the body, leading to an increase in proprioception, acceptance of oneself, more awareness and comfort being in one's body. In a safe and predictable environment, you are invited to notice sensations, experiment with movement and breathing, and make choices about what works best for you.

What to expect:

gentle yoga as a way to reconnect, notice sensation and feel empowered in your body, no physical assists, a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment

emphasis on self-awareness and self-regulation by using yoga techniques such as experimenting with movement and breathing, making choices about what is right for you

Yoga Nidra

The term yoga nidra is derived from the Sanskrit words, yoga meaning union and nidra translating to sleep. Not sleep as we think of it, but rather a conscious sleep. Yoga nidra is intended to induce full-body relaxation and a deep meditative state of consciousness. Yoga nidra works to unwind the body’s nervous system, the foundation of the body’s well-being. The technique of yoga nidra is both practical and easily accessible creating deeper awareness and relaxation for health, mental peace and awareness.

What Is Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra?

A deeply relaxing guided meditation, encouraging a sense of well-being.

Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® is an eight-stage guided meditation that has the power to transform, heal and rejuvenate you at core levels.  You are systematically guided on a meditative journey through your multi-dimensional self.  This includes awareness and healing at each level of being (the five koshas) — physical, energetic, mental-emotional, and bliss-healing layers of your being, in order to dissolve away tensions to reveal your True Self.
